Playground Rule #26: Do not climb up the slide while someone is going down the slide...

....or you will crack your head open....literally. Last evening, we were having a fun time. We had eaten our dinner of BBQ'd hamburgers, roasted garlic potatoes and corn. Everyone was in a great mood and playing in the backyard, except for me who was stuck inside doing dishes. Woe is me....is that a violin I hear playing for me??

Next thing I know Tim is running Cole inside and says "He cracked his head open". Note to Tim: Never NEVER EVER say something like that to a child's mother without her seeing the injury first. I was envisioning Cole's brain oozing out all over the place and wondering what kind of life he would go onto lead with a serious brain injury.

Once I saw it, obviously, I could see it wasn't life-threatening but he did sustain a pretty deep gash about a 1/2 inch long in the back of his head. It's a good thing Tim has a stomach for these kind of things because as soon as he got the bleeding to stop and he showed me the wound, my stomach started to turn. What if I had been by myself when this happened? My poor kids...I'd be more panicked than they would be.

It was apparent that he would need stitches so off to the emergency room he and Tim went. Three hours later, they returned home with Cole having gotten 3 staples in the back of his head. Tim said he was a trooper and didn't cry at all...which is more than I can say for me, who was at home crying off and on wondering how Cole was doing.

Tim was kind enough to take pics at the hospital with his cell phone because he has been well trained to take pics of everything, injuries included because we'll have to show Cole these pics next time he thinks climbing UP the slide while one of his little brothers is trying to go DOWN the slide is a good idea. And if you're gonna fall, next time don't aim for the edge of the cement patio.

Playground rule #26 has been broken; however, I do believe it will never be broken again.

Poor baby! That looks like it hurts.

I rememebr I was about 6 and older brother was about 9 and he climbed UP the slide on my turn DOWN and I KICKED him in the face and kicked out 1/2 of both his front teeth. Yep, broke them in half.

I got in lots of trouble and he got cool half teeth falsies.

Girl, when my son gets hurt, I have a panic attack. That is scary!

poor little man!!!
I am the coolest cucu, ber that you will ever meet, except for when it comes to my own kids. You could walk up to me with your arm falling off and I would know just what to do....but Daniel and Melissa fart wrong and I am a basket case.....what the heck happened to me?

Poor kiddo!

Once when I was a nanny for twin 3-yr-olds, I was chasing one who made a break for the street, when the other suddenly called out, "Karen! Look at me!" I turned to see him, some 300 yards away, sitting on top of the outside of a tube slide. And then he fell off it, six feet to the hard-packed sandy ground, directly onto his head. He was fine. Although, 13 years later I still wonder if he had any residual brain damage.

Kids!

Ouch! We had a very similar injury here last spring. Staples in the head are just not fun.

Meg said...

oh bless his heart. Staples suck! Far warning, they hurt worse coming out than they do going in!

Glad that he is ok though.

As a Mom and a nurse...I agree about never say anything as dramatic as someone gashed their head open with out a mother seeing it first! Wow what a trooper you are and so is Cole! Good thing it's friday!

Ow! My husband once rushed to me with Aidan in his arms, saying that he Aidan had fallen and broken the glass out of the built-in cabinets by the fireplace, cutting his head. I panicked picturing his entire head busting through the glass. It turned out he just had a scratch on his head, but I was so freaked out until I got a good look at his head.

because of my girlfriend, i don't freak out about things much. she's a notorious exaggerator and i know my attitude will carry over once babies start coming.

example: yesterday, she texts me with "OMG! I just sliced my wrist open!" my response was "Ewww. gross" because I knew it wasn't that bad. when I get home, my suspicions were confirmed - she had scraped off some skin in a 1/4" circle on the side of her wrist. She also likes to gasp and cry out over things that don't really require it. I'm sure that my blase attitude will come back to haunt me at some point because i don't take her seriously, but until that day comes, i won't freak out over "OMG!!!" from her. lol.

Glad the kiddo's OK.

Sending a hug your way!

I am so sorry! It is so scary to have that happen to our kids.

I love how your husband has been trained to take pictures though. That's great.

Ouch! Poor baby :)
I hope that heals nice and quick.
Kids - they constantly keep us on our toes. It never ends!

Staples? Oh, no! My husband just yelled at my oldest the other day at the playground for going up the slide while another little boy was going down. No injuries, though!

Musings of the Mrs. said...

Poor little thing. I'm sure that was totally traumatic (for you, he's probably forgotten it by now). Ew though...I don't have a stomach for those kind of pictures. You are very lucky your husband does!

Ouch! I'd be crying too!

Jana (Varley) Green said...

Owie. But I'm glad he's ok. I busted myhead in college, and I had to have one staple in....I don't remember anything...even the ride in the ambulance...until they asked me my name, then said "good" when I said it. I was like, "Well of course I know my name." Ha.

It didn't hurt AT ALL to get them out...I was worried about it too, so tell him not to worry. It's not even like getting a band aid pulled off. That (band aid) is worse.

Thanks for your comment on my picture on my blog...(why does that make me feel like I know you now???)

Anyway, I'm sorry, but at least there's no permanent damage.....

Have a good one,
Jana

Ow, ow ow! That rule get broken in parks allover the country every day. Your son should really be the poter boy for wrong way on the slide injuries.

oooo ouch!! poor thing!! Poor you!! I would've been freaking out if my hubby said that to me without me seeing it too!!
hope you all rest well tonight

Head wounds are so scary because they bleed so much! Glad everything is OK.

Christine said...

Oh Helene~ Sending you lots of hugs I wanted to cry for you as I have been there!! I want to assure you though I am the same about injuries, but when you are alone, that Mommy instinct pops right into gear and some how we keep it together. Megan has broken her wrist twice and gotten 10 stitches in her shin while dh was away and Nicole broke her collar bone. These accidents happen, but I know you are strong and overcome anything those 4four send your way.

How did Cole do today? I thought about him alllll day. Poor baby =(

Awww! Poor little Cole! I'm glad he's ok! We have the "no climbing up the slide" rule here too, and I try my best to enforce it :-) That being said, my middle daughter needed stitches for a gash in her head when she was 2 after she fell off the sofa (jumping on it of course) so I guess there are times injuries are just out of our control! LOL

Thanks for the great "egg carton" suggestion - I LOVE it! Also, you have a great memory! My article is in the April (just out) 2009 Parenting Magazine article on "puberty" by Denene Millner. It's a long article - my quotes are under the "What to expect from both" section. Thanks for remembering and being so thoughtful :-)

Have a GREAT weekend!

Ugh! Poor baby! Poor You! Your pictures of before and after look eerily similar to ones I took last year around this time of my chickie girls head - she fell out of a tree (rule #82- no climbing trees!) and landed on an incredibly sharp rock. Hubs almost passed out. The blood and trauma was no match for the idea that they might CUT HER HAIR for the stitches. Hysterical anyone? So glad he's okay!

Mich said...

How scary mama. Thank goodness Cole is alright. Now he's got bragging rights on a "pretty cool" injury one day. ;)

Thank goodness he's okay, and it wasn't any worse. And thank goodness for hubby being home at just the right time...

Thank goodness:)

Oh my I am so glad that he is alright. What is it with boys and their injuries. One of mine got a black eye this morning.

Heather Happymaker said...

Oh dear God, are you okay? My stomach is in knots just seeing that precious little baby head and baby hair with the gash in it! Poor, curious, playful little Cole.

Amy W said...

Yikes!! Glad to hear Cole will be ok. I just have to say you have your husband well-trained. I can't believe he knew to take pictures!!

Tami said...

I awarded you the Bear Hug award.
Please come by and pick her up!

OMGosh! Poor baby! I would have been freaking out too, so don't feel bad about that. Just proves that you have a Mommy Heart. :)

I'm coming over from Blog Stalkers Unite, asking for your help. I am in the running for a round trip airfare paid ticket to Connecticut, to meet a friend I became acquainted with through blogging. She is a super fun person and is holding this contest. I entered a funny story titled "Grapejuice Floaties, Now Marry Me." The person whose story receives the most votes will win a trip to meet this generous lady, whom I'm hoping to meet. The voting ends tonight I believe. I am ahead for now but there is a story coming up from behind out of nowhere and I would so, so, appreciate your help. Her blog is www.becausemomsaidso.blogspot.com and the voting is on the sidebar on the right. "Grapejuice, Floaties" Just go there and cast a vote for me, please. Thanks so much-you're awesome! ♥

OUCH!!! My kids LOVE to go UP the slide; I think I'm going to have to have a little talk with them!

Good thing your hubby was home! It seems that most of my children's injuries happen when my hubby is not around. The irony in that is that my husband deals with medical emergencies. I, on the other hand, tend to freak out when the kids get hurt and think, "why does this stuff only happen when my husband is gone?!?". I can't stand to even look when one of them gets hurt out of fear that the injury is something serious!

HarryJack's Mom said...

yikes, and ewwww, and Tim IS well-trained. Congratulations on raising such a brave boy! As DH would say, 'way to man up!' Hope healing goes well and the lesson is learned ;-)

Oh my goodness, Helene. You are a much braver woman than I. Althought I agree wholeheartedly with sending Tim to the ER, I just don't think that I could have taken the pictures you did.

I am calling you in the event that my kids are ever injurned.

OWIE and EWWWWW!

Ok, I don't understand stables? Don't they just cause more holes in your body?? That poor poor poor little guy!

I can't handle blood and boo-boo's either! I have yet to visit the ER with Ryan BUT I am sure it's only a matter of time...god I can only hope my husband is around if it does happen!

Hope Cole is doing better!

My son had 3 injuries like this. I dunno if his head is just BIG or what, but he was always smacking it against something! I'm glad this was relatively minor.
