"There's fried zucchini, steamed zucchini, grilled zucchini...all kinds of zucchini"

Our little garden has really taken off in the last couple of weeks....we've got zucchini (galore), green beans, strawberries, cucumbers and tomatoes.

So I've had to get a little creative with the zucchini because we've had so much of it....yesterday the kids and I were out in the garden picking some of the veggies and I said, "Look, we've got 4 more zucchinis". The kids didn't look very thrilled as they said, "Why don't we have more strawberries?".

I tried to excite them about all the possible ways to prepare zucchini, as I did my best Bubba impersonation, "Aw, come on now....I know everything there is to know about zucchini....you got your fried zucchini, steamed zucchini, grilled zucchini...all kinds of zucchini...". Sure, it wasn't shrimp and they have no clue who the heck Bubba is but anyway....I did manage to get smiles out of them.

Here are a few pictures:

This here is "Junior Mama"....we ate "Mama" a couple weeks ago.

Here are Cole and Bella showing Junior Mama some love....(don't ask about the goggles Cole's wearing...he's going through a phase....)

Bella insisted I take this picture so we'd have a full-body comparison of how small Junior Mama is compared to her. She even put her bracelet around Junior Mama to show that she's bigger than the zucchini (don't ask about the bright pink rainboots Bella's wearing in 100 degree weather with no sign of any rain.....she's going through a phase....)

A couple days later, we picked "Big Papa" and his two friends "Straw" and "Berry". We've since noticed that Straw and Berry were the runts of the litter. We're starting to get bigger strawberries now (although Garrett keeps picking them off before they have a chance to turn red....he likes to carry them around with him everywhere he goes....he's going through a phase....)

Just the other day, we found "Little Papa", "Baby Mama" and "Bob". "Bob....why Bob?", I asked the kids. Cole said, "Why not Bob?". Okay.....that's an acceptable explanation I suppose (to a 4-yr old, anyway).

Yesterday, we picked a handful of green beans (forgot to take a picture of them). Sadly, the kids didn't give the green beans any names. We ate them tonight with dinner....while staring at a bunch of dead flowers in a vase that Bella picked from our neighbor's garden. Bella explained, "I picked them when they were alive but now they got dead....but they sure were pretty before they went and got dead".

On that note, we'll be having fried zucchini with dinner tonight....and perhaps some zucchini bread the next day.....

LOL, I love the names! I'd love having zucchini with my dinner tonight! Can I come over. Jeremiah makes a awesome broiled (baked first) zucchini, slice'um up 1 1/2 in circles, coat them lightly with olive oil, sea salt, and pepper, a tad Parmesan Romano cheese (just a coating) bake for 20 min then broil. a little. Sorry we're not good with recipes. LOL. we just create! Caleb LOVES it this way, we use 4 other cheeses when we buy too much and try out different ways to make it. I think I'm coming for dinner. LOL

Love the goggles and the rain boots, I saw a little girl yesterday at the store who had hers on, Pink too. So adorable!

Good job on the zucchini! We have some tomatoes sprouting, and my dad informed us yesterday that he has blackberries! Yum!

Are you still doing the journaling? I pulled mine out and wrote in them yesterday for the first time in months.

LOL at the phases ... why is it that phases never end? They just give birth to new ones?

I love zucchini bread, and that's coming from someone who is allergic to any food that is green.

Great job with the "green thumb"! But I love the rainboots! It brings back memories to my tomboy. Out in the summer heat with nothing on but a swimsuit and rubber boots. As we were wheeling our small harvest down the sidewalk from our community garden, one neighbor drove by and rolled down their window to ask if I was raised on a farm. NOOOOOOOO!!!!! just because my kids look like hill billies, doesn't mean their Momma was one! Fortunatley for you we typically don't "catch" their phases and we probably won't be seeing you in rainboots and goggles anytime soon. But if you do catch it please post a pic! ha ha

Great pictures! There's also zucchini muffins with crystallized ginger ... at least that's what the zucchini in my fridge says. :)

Ha Ha! I love that all your kids are "going through a phase!" And that they named everything before they ate it.

I wish I was your neighbor, I would totally take some of that zucchini off your hands. Yum!!!

Love it! We had way too many last year, I had to get ber creative. My favs were stuffed zucchini (stuffed with ground turkey with a tomato sauce over the top) and cream of zucchini soup, most of which we froze for winter. This year we have 5 tomato plants, so I will need to get very creative with those.

Oh and sauteed in butter and topped with parmesan cheese is good too.

I love zucchini and squash! I will just cut it up, throw it in the microwave for a minute, and eat it with butter and salt.

You guys sure are turning into gardening pros! Sorry, no good zucchini recipes here.

You'll have to excuse the fact that I'm still in my sweatpants and t-shirt at 12. I'm going through a phase. You know the exhausted Mom phase. Perhaps you've heard of it!

Good lookin' veggies there. At least you have a few strawberries. I've still got zilch.

So glad to see the goggles. My kid is going through the same phase!

That made me think of Bubba the Shrimp man from Forrest Gump. We got the jumbo shrimp, the curry shrimp, the deep fried shrimp...

Yum! I love zucchini bread...my grandma used to make that all of the time! Happy Baking!

I love the names of your fruits and veggies! I've stopped planting zucchini because of how much it produces.... the kids were practically beggging me not to plant any this year. Think I might have over-done it last year?!

So is it helping them eat their vegetables when they are excited about growing them? I wondered about that.

And is Landon the only one NOT going through a phase? :-)

Your kids EAT zucchini?

Mine run, screaming and covering their faces, from the monster vegetable.

At least they are eating it! And we are wearing snow boots still so don't feel bad about the rain boots. (It's been over 100 here for the past week.)

Oh yea. Zucchini loves that central valley climate. I could never keep up with mine. I have a great recipe for zucchini bread if you want it. It also always alot of fun to let a couple keep growing so you have a mondo zucchini. Tastes like crap but its good for zucchini bread and the kids will be impressed.

MMMMMMMMMmmm, I am a zucchini freak. I like zucchini bread and zucchini steamed with chopped shallots, a little vegeta or other seasoning and wrap in some foil, sprayed with cooking spray. Then bake at 350 degrees for about 30 or 40 minutes. Until very soft. Then eat it with some crusty Italian or French bread from one of the local bakeries. It's better than butter. After it's all steamed and soft you can even pulse it in the food processor to make like a yummy zucchini, shallot paste to eat on your bread.
Enjoy your zucchini summer!

I can only eat zucchini fried.

Very cool garden produce! I couldn't have done that : ) What is it with kids and wearing weird things? Noly wears her goggles all the time. I don't know that they'll outgrow it by the time they're teens.

Yea I am so glad your garden is doing so well!!! Yippee, I just love the names, I can't wait till my boys get older and can get more "into" the garden.

Check out my blog if you need any more zucchini recipes, zucchini quesadillas have become a favorite around our house.

Well, hopefully you've tried zucchini bread. We made a really tasty recipe the other night - Summer Squash Gratin. It was a lot of work, but the girls actually ate some!

How fun! my son went through a phase of wearing his goggles, too. Last week he found his belt and wore it to bed, calling it his kung fu master belt. OK.

I have a black thumb, I swear. But the thought of some deep fried zucchini slices puts me in a gardening mood, not exactly health food though.

Oooh! I have a recipe for zucchini cookies! Not sure if you still have zucchini to use up, but thought I'd mention it just in case. It's listed on my blog under my alphabetical list of recipes. :)

I figure that if the children are alive when my husband gets home at the end of the day, I've done my job.
