The reality of reality shows....

Okay, so I admit it....I'm a reality show junkie. I can't help it. I enjoy getting lost in the drama of someone else's life, especially if it's really juicy drama. What I didn't expect though was to end up liking some celebrities that I actually couldn't stand at one point. And those celebrities that I liked? I ended up despising them. Go figure......

From "couldn't stand" to "not so bad afterall".....

First, we have Tori Spelling and her family in their reality show, Home Sweet Hollywood. I was a huge 90210 fan back in the day and I could never stand her. I mean, for a virgin, her character dressed like a total slut and she was always whining and crying about something. Then a few years go by, she (Tori, not Donna) cheats on her husband with her current husband and breaks up his family. I had like ZERO respect for her. Then her reality show came on the air and I figured I'd catch the first episode so I could enjoy hating on her some more. I was shocked that I actually ended up adoring her. She seems like a real person....someone I could see myself being friends with in real life. As a mother, she experiences the same emotions I experience...the same mommy guilt, the same mother issues I have with my own mother. Plus, her kids are absolutely adorable. So I have fallen in love with Donna Martin. Shoot me.

Second is Denise Richards on her show "It's Complicated". I had always disliked her but for no specific reason. Mainly because she reminded me of Barbie with her tiny perky boobs and her little pixie nose. Honestly, she just didn't come across as a nice person. Then she married Charlie Sheen and I figured they deserved each other. She then divorced Charlie Sheen and all kinds of accusations started flying about what a bitch she was and how she was making his life miserable and using their two young daughters as pawns. Oh, then she started dating her best friend's husband. Granted, Richie Sambora and Heather Locklear were already separated when Denise started dating him but all us women know there is a rule in the sisterhood - you don't date your best friend's sooon-to-be ex-husband. Then it was announced that she'd have her own reality show....I'm not sure why even watched the first episode, other than there was probably nothing else on tv that night. I was surprised at how much I ended up liking her. She seems very down-to-earth, not snobby at all, she comes across as a loving, caring mother, daughter and sister. She even seems to go to great lengths to help friends out. Plus, watching her interact with her father, who is a recent widower, is very sweet.

Next, we have Gene Simmons and his family from Family Jewels. It's not that I ever disliked Gene Simmons, it was more that the guy totally freaked me out. Name one kid who wasn't scared of him when he dressed up as the demon in Kiss and I'll send you one of my kids (UPS- next day delivery, even). Turns out Gene Simmons is actually a loving father with an amazing sense of humor and such an intense desire to protect his family. He's especially overprotective when it comes to his daughter, Sophie. Don't get me wrong, though, he's still an arrogant asshole but he just seems more likable now.....probably the whole family thing.

From "seems pretty cool" to "oh man, what was I thinking...

Jon and Kate Gosselin....I don't think I even need to mention my reasons for this one. It's as obvious as obvious gets.

Then there's Kendra Wilkinson, one of the girls from The Girls Next Door. For some reason, I liked her on that show. I thought she just seemed more down-to-earth than the other 2 girls....someone who really enjoyed life and had a great time. But then she left Hugh Hefner and got her own show called Kendra. And now she is the ultimate idiot....the one episode where she had a yard sale proved that to me.

Lastly, there's the Kardashian sisters. I honestly had no clue who they were until I watched their show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Really.....who the hell are they and why are they important enough to have their own show? I mean, I get the whole Bruce Jenner connection but he's seen better days, in my opinion.

Okay, so now I wanna hear from you....what (if any) reality shows do you watch? Has it changed your opinion of those celebrities at all?

I could never stand Tori Spelling either. I haven't watched her show though.

The only reality show I have seen is Jon & Kate. I stopped watching a few seasons ago. I just couldn't take Kate's constant degrading of her husband. However, that is no reason for him to start cheating on her. He needs to grow up, he's got 8 kids!

Okay, I admit it, I have not watched a single episode of these shows except for Family Jewels and that was ages ago...like when the show first came out. AND I was more interested in Gene's wife and what she looked like since my long lost DAYS (Days of Our Lives) days. Ha! Shanna Tweed still looks good, but then again, she'd have to compared to her husband. Which, by the way he was on Celebrity Apprentice a few years ago and that show I DID watch.

This was a great post!

I hardly ever get to watch TV at all, so all I know about all those reality shows that you mentioned was through news articles, etc. The one reality show that I got hooked on was Dancing with the Stars and I only get to watch on YouTube. Not exactly the type of reality show where you get to really like or dislike any of the celebrities, though...

I've always loved Tori Spelling and I just can't get enough of their new show!

One show I love that G.I Joe absolutely hates is "18 Kids and counting" about the Duggars. I'm an only child and our Lucy will be an only child so those people are bizzar and fascinating to me. But they really freak G.I Joe out :P

I love reality shows as well. I am kind of a voyeur, thus the whole loving to blog thing! I watch most of my shows on Bravo. Last season on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, I hated NeNe. She was so ghetto, but this season I love her and hate Kim, who is such white trash that every time she comes on, I want to TIVO, but am glued to the trouble she gets into, and the stupid things she says!!

I love Tori's show, and Denise's show, the Gene one I do not know much about. Then I do like Jon and Katie. I feel bad for her. I watched the other day and she seem so different. I think she was just in a bad place before. Have a great weekend.

I love reality TV too -it's funny how you think these shows are so bad and then you find that you can't stop watching them!

The only reality shows I've ever watched are John and Kate, 16 kids and Counting (which is now 18 or 19 I believe), and Can You Duet. Not much drama on Can You Duet, and I like it that way. 16 Kids and Counting was just a special back when I watched it, and I was disinclined to watch their show after seeing it. I didn't watch John and Kate for long because I was so irritated with how Kate treated her family. Between barking at her kids and treating her husband like he's just another one of them the show left a bad taste in my mouth.

My favorite 'reality show' is The Soup....which makes fun of all reality shows. Good times.

I have seen every single one of these shows.

I love Tori and Dean. They are a normal couple. Do I agree with them leaving their spouses for each other? No. But they were clearly meant to be.

I actually can't stand Denise Richards. I think her show is ridiculous.

Yeah, I didn't like Tori Spelling either. I'll have to try watching her show.

I didn't watch 90210 growing up, but knew who Tori Spelling was (really, who hasn't?!). One day I happened to catch her reality TV show last summer Home Sweet Hollywood and from that moment on I was hooked. It was a marathon so I sat glued to the TV while my twins were napping.

I don't normally watch TV so it was actually fun to be able to chat about a popular show with other fans.

I absolutely loved the show last summer - even taped it when I couldn't watch it when it was on. The minute she turned extremely popular I lost interest because it was less about her real life and more about the life she was trying to lead.

I haven't watched it yet this summer and don't plan on it, but I did read her first book and enjoyed it.

LOL, this is a great post! Ok, my reality shows: SYTYCD, American Idol, Project Runway, Models of the Runway, Rachel Zoe, Hell's Kitchen, More to Love. That's a lot, isn't it? And maybe not as gossip-y as other reality shows, I do enjoy reading reality gossip on line... I'm a weirdo. ;-)

Okay. I love Tori. Dean, not so much. I hear she & her mom are going to make up.

I agree with Denise, but don't watch much.

I'm kinda feeling sorry for Kate. I used to feel sorry for Jon, now I just want to slap his face. Did you see her on Regis? sad

I agree with the yard sale comment, but now that Kendra has gotten pg she seems to have REALLY matured.

And the Kardashians. It's like watching a train wreck. But I love it!

Ok... I almost hate to admit this... but I love the Dugger's! lol At first I thought anyone with 18 kids has to have some sort of mental problem. But after watching a few episodes I really have a lot of respect for them! They have so much to keep track of yet do it with such a calm sense of peace and orderliness that's downright amazing.

The closest thing to a reality show I get to watch is Total Drama Island and Total Drama Action.

Yes, they are cartoons.

I like Tori and Dean too. I love Liam and Stella. I'm not even sure I watch the show because of Tori and Dean but I am sure I watch it because of Stella and Liam. They are so cute. Love Kendra, not a big fan of Denise, and I've come to detest the Gosselin's because they aren't being honest with themselves. They say the media exploits their children and they've done a partway decent job of that themselves. I will admit I miss the Hayes family, from Table for 12, and the Masche's on Raising Sextuplets because I find Betty Hayes and Jenny Masche to be the exact opposite of the stuffy Kate and I like the husbands on those shows because they are still men unlike the unic that Jon Gosselin has proven he is.

I can't bring myself to watch any of the reality stuff. Too much whining over nothing.

I only have one set of twins but two others -- one at the ripe old age of 42. Talk about God having a sense of humor!

Visiting from the follow me club. Great blog!

I totally agree about Tori Spelling. I used to dislike her because of her bad boob job and what I thought was lack of intelligence. Then I started watching her show because nothing else was on and totally love her. I love that she has gay friends that are "guncles" to the kids, that she threw them a wedding and involves them in her kids lives like they were relatives. I loved that she was making baby food for her kids. She's sometimes still kind of an airhead, but it's endearing. lol.

I also agree about Kate Gosslin. I used to like her and the whole family, but now I think she's a raging bitch-face and John's a douchebag. I still only watch their show because I'm in love with their kids. LOL. Leah and Aaden are my favorites. LOL.

Lastly, I disagree with you on Kendra. I hated her on GND. She was (well, still is) so stupid and I couldn't stand her. I only saw about half of the episodes from her new show and think she's so sweet. Pregnancy seems to have changed her for the better. If she gets a new season, I'll definitely be watching.

Okay, seriously...your first part is the complete opposite of me! I always LOVED Tori Spelling...then the whole adultery thing really mad me disappointed in her.

Denise Richards? LOVED her when she was married to CS (I love him BTW...I can't help it), then the whole Heather Locklear thing...couldn't stand her!

Gene Simmons...I'm neutral.

How funny! I ADORE So You Think You Can Dance (did a whole post about it a little while back)...also, I watch The Hills...don't tell.

Last I've never watched Dancing With The Stars much, but am totally excited to watch Donnie Osmond!

I was the same way with Tori and Denise! After watching their shows I have a whole new outlook on both them. I love how Denise is with her Dad. She's such a great daughter and Tori is such a cute mom.

I used to watch Jon and Kate until they got money and fame hungry and once they moved into the million dollar home I watched no more. It was no longer "realistic" to me. Where's the struggle trying to raise 8 kids. I'd love some free vacations and nannies.

The Duggars just irritate me. Seriously HOW MANY kids are they gonna keep poppin out?? And you know the mom and dad are not that super sweet to each other all the time. With that many kids they are bound to get on each others nerves just like the rest of us.

I love Tori Spelling in "real Life". I must admit thought that the only reason I watch her show is because I have the hots for her hubby...

And I can't bash Kate because I am a lot like her (except maybe a smidge nicer to my husband).

I love reality TV too. I guess this is just another reason why we are perfect for each other. Wouldn't be awesome just to hold ourselves up together in a hotel, ice creams and watch reality TV?

I'm a reality junkie too! Lately I've been watching Flipping Out and the Rachel Zoe Project. I just heard last night that The Amazing Race is due to start again soon and THAT is my favorite show of all!

I watch every single one that you mentioned & enjoy them all. I had the same thoughts you did regarding Tori Spelling & Denise Richards prior to watching their shows. Just goes to show how the media can portray someone & be totally wrong. Who knew they were so down to earth & nice?

Zeemaid said...

i used to enjoy Jon & Kate plus 8 but now can't stand it... I'm sure you get why.

My husband is addicted to America's Got Talent, America's Greatest Inventor, American Idol etc. I watch but only under duress. Oh I get sucked in and enjoy it but I hate being tied to the t.v. that way. I don't like the time committment. *L*

Hi. My name is Bobbi and I am a reality tv junkie....

I agree with you list 100%! I also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE VH1 reality tv. My husband totally made fun of me during the Rock of Love episodes and yes, I even watched Flavor of Love (gagging through the tears of laughter). LOL

we are so alike!

I am a reality TV show junkie, for sure! This is a cute post...Linked Within sucked me in. The only thing I am tired of listening to Tori talk about is how she is worried Dean will find another woman attractive could it be how you met) and how hard it is to be a mom...with a nanny, and how they need to work for money...duh don't we all (I am of course paraphrasing my interpretations).

I figure that if the children are alive when my husband gets home at the end of the day, I've done my job.
