But sushi can be expensive when eating it at a restaurant so we don't get to indulge in our favorite food very often. That is....until I read a post on Buckaroo Mama's blog, on how to make sushi at home! I honestly had no idea it was so easy to make!!
As soon as I read her post, I immediately commented on her blog that I was going to try making sushi with the kids! We went out the next day and got the ingredients for California rolls: imitation crab, sushi rice, Japanese rice vinegar, cucumbers and Nori (seaweed wraps) - we left out the avocado because none of us care for it). You'll also need a sushi mat to roll the sushi. Because I didn't take pictures as we made our sushi, click right HERE to go directly to her post where she gives directions step by step.
The kids helped me put all the ingredients on the seaweed and helped me roll them up. It was SOOOO yummy!!! Here's what our sushi looked like....
We made sushi 3 times last week! It's THAT good!
When I started my blog, it was mainly a way for me to keep in touch with family and friends while I was pregnant with Garrett and Landon. Then, over time, it morphed into what it is today....a place for me to record the kids' milestones, funny and interesting events that have happened, and some of my thoughts about the experiences I've had in my life. I never imagined I'd meet as many wonderful bloggers as I have....it's like its own little community. You start out reading these blogs and, before you know it, you feel like you've known them all your life....you really start to care about what's going on in their lives. And I'm so grateful for those who follow my blog and for the wonderful comments they leave for me!! You all rock!
This past week, I've received some awards....so exciting! Each one put a smile on my face and I truly appreciate the recognition!
Jen at TwinHappy Jen held the First Annual Twinny Awards contest and I won the Best Twin Comedy Blog award for funniest blog!!! How awesome is that! Not only is Jen the mother of twins but she's also the author of a children's book, Two Snowflakes. She's also the host of Twin Tuesday on Twitter. I was given this award by ShortMama at Family of Shorts ! Her blog is fantastic and I'm not just saying that because I'm a "short mama" too! She also has a wonderful cooking blog that you must check out. There's a recipe for fudge that she recently posted and it had me drooling!! Thank you, Short Mama!!
I was given this award by Amy at Keeping up with the Schultz Family. I've been reading Amy's blog for awhile now and I love her stories! She has an adorable daughter...and Amy's mom is the kind of grandmother I wish my kids had! Thank you, Amy!
I was given this award by Vicki at Frugal Moms Knows Best. She has the most amazing ideas on how to stretch a dollar and we all need tips like that with the economy being the way it is these days. She also gives wonderful Mommy tips, which help to make our lives a little easier. Thank you, Vicki!
This award was given to me by Halle at Housecapated. She shares awesome home improvement tips, as well as fun craft ideas. You have to check out her post where she revamped her living room....it's beautiful! Thank you, Halle!
Please stop by the above-mentioned blogs and check them out! I think you'll be happy you did!! And since I have a hard time making any kind of decision, I'm passing these awards on to anyone who follows my blog! I hope it makes your day, like it did mine!

i love sushi too, and my hubby doesn't, but my daughter does. I will have to go and check out how to make it and try it with her...as soon as she gets over the porker flu!
OK, I love seafood. Love it. But I can't do sushi. I have tried it many times and just don't like it. Seaweed is of the devil. Blech.
Ok now this is just sad because I am half japanese and my sushi never, seriously NEVER, turns out looking as great as yours! Mine come out square, which I have no idea how that is even possible! I usually just give up and form balls with seaweed slapped around it. The kids look at it like what the heck are these. They get excited when "Oba" (my mom) comes for a visit because they know they will get some decent sushi haha.
Forgot to add that my hubby doesn't care for it either, but that's ok, that just means there's more for the rest of us! ;p
Give a kid a fish, he eats for a day.
Teach a kid to roll his own, and he'll be able to feed himself in college while all his buddies are eating junk food.
I love seafood but sushi scares me lol...never even tried it, but those California rolls look good!
Thanks for the food blog mention too, thats awesome!!
I do enjoy this little blogging community, but not sushi so much!
Wow your sushi came out great. I wonder if I could do this? Thanks for all of the kind words about my Mom that is sweet. She is the best. I am very lucky to have her and my MIL. I get to go to Texas in a few weeks to see her. I know Alyce can't wait either. Have a great day.
Congrats on your lovely awards! You so deserve them!!! Your sushi looks good. I never tried it before. Maybe it's time to give it a try:) Happy Sunday!
We tried sushi recently too, but yours did turn out much better than ours. It was fun and my kids love it. If I ever have a sushi craving I usually eat it in the car while I'm out shopping alone, otherwise I wouldn't get a bite.
Congrats on the awards!
The sushi looks cool! It's amazing how many cool things you can learn by reading blogs : )
Can you believe I've never even tried sushi! But yours looks GREAT! Now I'm hungry :) And how fun that you can put it together with the kiddos. My girls love to be in the kitchen.
Holy awards!
Seriously, making sushi isn't that hard? I've never tried. It sure seems like it would be hard.
Our local cooking school offers a sushi making class every other month or so. I've thought about taking one. Now you have me convinced to try it. It looks like the boys would enjoy helping, too.
I am not a sushi girl, but it looks pretty :)
You know, I hate sushi. Ok, Ive never had it. But I will not eat raw fish. Simple as that. I don't even care of COOKED fish (except a big greasy fried piece!) but there is a new sushi place opening here in town, and my hubby is making me go. He thinks I'll try some..we'll see. ;)
I totally LOVE sushi too. I am going to go and watch how to make it!
Congrats on your awards!
I love sushi too. I will have to watch the video, it looks great!
You know I am totally afraid to try sushi. Just something about raw fish.
Please stop by my blog. I left you something.
I love sushi. And neither my toddlers/preschooler OR my husband would ever touch it (I am blessed with a husband who doesn't like ANY seafood - freak).
One of the hardest things about my pregnancies is that I craved sushi. The aversions to "brown liquids" (diet coke and coffee) were great - but craving raw fish? That was just cruel.
Wow, lots of awards. I've received several lately. OMG 655 followers.
Does it excite you to get one more?
I'm just getting close to 100 and I can't imagine having what you have. I spend my entire day blogging and there isn't enough time. You go girl! I saw that Hearts Make Families just gave you another award. You should be very proud of yourself.
Congrats, Helene --on the sushi and the awards! Sushi gets to be such that it's become my "lazy" way out when making meals for the family now.
Thanks for the shout-out, too. :)
Sushi three times in one week and a pile of awards. NOT BAD and it's not even Christmas yet. I wanna be you :) Hope the coming week is just as good
That Sushi looks gourmet girl! I need to try that and it must be good if it's coming from Buckeroomama! Congrats on the awards, too. You rock!
So weird...just this week I told my husband that I need sushi buddies. I used to work with some gals that loved it as much as me, but we moved away from there, so I now have no one to eat it with me. And sushi is just something you have to indulge in with a group, you know?
Your sushi looks AWESOME! Way impressed. I might have to give that whirl sometime. Peanut & Jelly Bean have never had sushi or much fish for that matter. I hope they are not like twindada because he doesn't like fish either. Boo! :)
Congrats on the awards! You so deserve them!
Congratulations on the awards! That sushi looks good- I'm not a huge fan of sushi, but sometimes I like it...hehe!
I'm with your hubby on this one! the thought of eating raw fish just grosses me out!

Congrats on your awards!
I've never has sushi, but I'm not a fan of seafood.
Homemade sushi sounds divine!
I love that Cole and Bella love sushi, too. Kids after my own heart!
Oh my gosh, we love sushi here too! I need to make my own, because you're right, it does add up!!
I love seafood, but I don't really love sushi.
Nice pics. Thanks for passing by my blog.
Please come back!
:)
Move over on the bench, Tim ... I hate sushi. And seafood (except for crab cakes).
But I love to look at it - it always looks so pretty!
Why can't sushi be made with bread, past and potatoes? I'd be all over it.
Girl that sushi looks like it came from a restaurant! Great job.
I love, love, LOVE California rolls but always figured you had to be a sushi chef to make them. I am on my way to check out that link—THANKS!
I love sushi and never dreamed of making my own. How much did it cost you-- I wonder if it is a big savings or not. Yours look like a sushi chef made them-- made me drool!! ;)
I really need to start making my own sushi. I miss it so much! It's just not in the budget anymore. You've inspired me!
Yum-o! Great. Now I'm craving some sushi. I should try to make it, but our grocery store sells it.
Congrats on all the awards!!!! You deserve them, super-mom! Oh, and when are you going to make me sushi again!??!
