A tropical oasis awaits me…

Anyone who knows me is fully aware of how much I enjoy the beach!

Everything about it spells “relaxation” to me...the sound of the waves crashing against the shore, the scent of sea salt in the air, palm trees swaying in the breeze, the softness of the sand under my feet and the squeals of hungry seagulls soaring above.

Is Tim a fan of the beach? Not so much. He hates the messiness of the sand, the sun is NOT his friend and he has a tremendous fear of sharks.

As if sharks can crawl their way onto the shore? Whatever....

So I figured it was time to bring the tropical oasis TO me. Now, let me just put it out there and say, we did not hire a professional landscaper…just act surprised, okay?

Remember that friend who came over and helped clean our house before the party a couple weeks ago? That same friend came over and helped me dig holes for the trees!

How do you repay a friend who has helped you so much? I tried to give her my first-born but she refused. She asked for the third-born instead but I’m kind of attached to him.

I’m still nowhere near finished…we still have to add shredded bark, more shrubs and a small waterfall but it’s coming along nicely.

I was hoping to put plumerias around the palm trees but no such luck finding any…so I settled for marigolds, which the kids named.

I just love the look of the palm trees! The yard already looks so much better…and I love the sound of the leaves blowing in the wind.

If I close my eyes for just a minute, I can transcend myself to a deserted island beach…and then I’m quickly snapped back to reality when I hear, “Mommy, Bella put her butt on my pillow so you need to wash it”.

Oh, and no earthworms were harmed at any point during this backyard renovation.

Bella was on patrol taking note of each and every earthworm that was uncovered, Cole and Landon were responsible for moving the earthworms to safer ground, and Garrett was the one screaming “eeewww, gross” the whole time.

If you’re wondering about the bathroom remodel…well, that’s come to a screeching halt.

Why, you ask? It’s simple.

Tim no longer has a deadline. We were trying to rush to get it done before Garrett and Landon’s party but Tim barely got the toilet attached to the floor before guests started arriving.

Maybe he’ll have it done by the time Cole and Bella graduate from high school. All in good time, right?

Girl, your gonna enjoy your oasis so much! I love Bella's campaign to save the earthworms. You can let her know if you accidentally hack one in half it can regenerate it's body. Their gifted that way!

You need to plan a dinner party inviting people Tim would love to impress and get the man back on schedule girlfriend! They all need a little push (SHOVE) ever now and then. Heeheeheehe!!!

God bless your day ,sweetie!

It looks so nice, I wish I could get motivated to do some stuff in our yard. Tracy and the kids want to do a garden, guess we will see. Maybe if I keep looking at your pics of the yard it will motivate me

When I was a kid, my Dad had our house "under construction" for 16 years! He finally got everything done in time for my youngest brothers graduation party.

I guess you'll have to think up a new deadline before they are in high school hopefully. The trees look great, good job! ;D

Who needs a bathroom when you've got palm trees!?!

Helene - the back yard looks awesome! Is your friend holding interviews for her next bff? I'm so in!

Hope you took some Advil or Motrin for the knees! And hope you get your waterfall soon!

The kids rocks as Mini Mother Natures!

love it! i can't wait 'til i can finally go outside and start enjoying the beautiful weather. the rule down here is never plant anything before Mother's Day. it's still too soggy from the snow last weekend to play outside. have fun and enjoy the weather and the beautiful trees!

Wow, that looks amazing. I would love to bring the beach to my backyard (unfortunately I don't live in the climate for it). It was actually pretty depressing reading that amazing description of the beach and looking out my window at the cold, dark day that awaits me. Oh well!

Sorry about your bathroom but I love the palm trees! Every year we add more trees to our backyard (which has a huge fence line and NO shade from sun up to sun down) so we're about to do a few more but no palms. Our plan is to do a pool in about 3 or 4 more years and I will definitely be adding palm trees around that. What is it that's so relaxing about them? Ahhh...I'll just take a little daydream thinking about your oasis. Yea for you!

I love it! It looks wonderful and relaxing.

Now after you dragged your kids to bed you can go sit outside with your glass of wine and enjoy the sights and sounds in peace and quiet! Bliss!

Oh I love it! I'm a beach whore too. Nothing says heaven like the sound of ocean waves rolling in, and an ocean breeze.

I LOVE the beach. It's one of my favorite places (right after Disneyland and Angels Stadium).

Your new palm trees are gorgeous! I'm so impressed you and your friend did all the work yourselves!

Awesome! I would have a tropical oasis in my backyard too if the climate in Kansas would support it. Enjoy!!

It looks so nice and relaxing already. I can just picture myself there on a lounge chair with a cold drink with an umbrella in it....oh wait, I don't live there.

That is just beautiful! I love to garden and plant stuff. I love digging holes and getting into the dirt!

LAst year Emily and I planted 100 perennials and it was the best week ever! Unfortunatley, this year we do not have much planned :-( Maybe a couple of bushes.

She loves fining worms and I am on the hunt for a worm farm for her! I am kinda tired of using Tupperware and watching them die :-(

Your yard is coming along very well!! It looks great! And thank you for following me and the comment :) I hope you have a wonderful day. Did I mention I love your sense of humor it rocks!!

eh, bathrooms are overrated anyway ;)

i LOVE the yard!!! have you thought about hibiscus bushes? that could add to the hawaii flair and they are hard to kill, lol. Also, bird of paradise!

Oh, and plumeria usually grow into decent sized trees, so maybe not being able to find them was a good thing? Although I guess you could've done what I did with the sprigs... hmm. Bummer.

Garrett sounds like my kinda boy, hates seagulls and worms. Can I have him?

CaneWife said...

Sharks can too climb up on the beach!

Just kidding.

What a beautiful yard renovation. It looks absolutely serene and tropical and peaceful.

Enjoy it!

Looks great! Except for the worm . . . I'm with Garrett on that picture.

You're impressive, with all that yard work! Who needs a bathroom, anyway.

I have a proposal. Let's leave the kids with the hubbies and take a vacation on the beach somewhere. Lucas doesn't like sand either.

The palm trees are AWESOME!!! The story about the worms is too funny especially the part where one of the boys was thinking they were "icky".

As for the beach..I am with you LOVE IT but my husband is like Tim. I swear he thinks Sharks can follow you onto land..must be a guy thing!!

Good Luck with the re-model..I know the feeling once the husbands decide no hurry things STOP!!

Okay, so you've been holding out on us yet again---not only are you Supermom and Cake Boss, but you're a landscape artist and Multiples Mom Extraordinare.

I am not sure we can be friends anymore, honestly. You're too GOOD.

It looks AMAZING! You did a phenomenal job, Helene! And it looks like the kids had fun helping out.

It looks so, so good! I'm dreaming of the day I can get into our yard and transform part of it into a bigger garden. Currently, it's in the process of being buried under 12 -15 inches of snow. Can I come hang out in your oasis?

Love the landscaping! But did I miss the post for the final results of the bathroom project? HA!

I love your backyard. Can you send your friend over my way? Who am I kidding? I have a manager of a golf course that helped me last year do a beautiful job on my yard. Everything died before fall.

Kristi said...

Oh, I love it!! Maybe you can have someone watch your kids at their house (maybe that same friend, she's definitely a keeper), while you relax in your own backyard!! I'm dying to get my backyard done. Do home improvements ever end?? sigh...
