A few good reasons to reveal those pearly whites…

Sometimes I participate in the “Feel Good Friday” meme hosted by The Girl Next Door Grows Up but one of my other blogging buddies, Jen at Buried with Children, is hosting a fun meme today called “Kids Make the Darndest Things”.

Since this week was a pretty good one and the kids were rather artistically creative, I thought I’d roll both memes up into ONE!

1) How could you look at these next two pictures and not smile?

DSCN0473

DSCN0484

There’s a reason why kids look this sweet while they sleep…it’s so you don’t kill them when they’re awake…especially after they’ve done what I’m about to show you next…

2)

DSCN0551

DSCN0553

Yes, folks, this would be our family room sofa…which has now been personally decorated by my 5-year old son and one of my 3-year old sons.

When I asked them who was responsible for the spontaneous art work, this is the response I got…

Garrett: Cole did it
Cole: No, Garrett did it.
Garrett: No, not me!
Cole: Uh, it was the cat.
Garrett: Yeah, the cat did it.
Me: Do you both think I’m really THAT stupid?
Cole: Mommy, you sure look pretty today.

Apparently, they think I'm stupid AND desperate for compliments.

3) Often times, their artwork actually makes a lot of sense. For instance, the following are not just simple easter egg crafts.

They also show what a person's brain looks like BEFORE they become a parent…

DSCN0555

And what a person’s brain looks like AFTER becoming a parent…

DSCN0556

4) Usually, when I receive any kind of gift money, I spend it on material items which will make my life easier. With my Christmas money, I bought a Shark steam mop (waited until it went on sale at Kohl’s and then, with my 30% off coupon, I paid only $50 for a $119 mop) and a new Brita water filter system.

If you do not have a steam mop, I suggest you high-tail it to your nearest store and buy one NOW. Seriously, it’s the best money I’ve spent in a long time. I actually LIKE mopping the floor now. That says a lot, right there.

But, wait…that really wasn’t the point of this particular “feel good” moment. I actually used some of my birthday money yesterday to get my hair highlighted and trimmed!

It’s amazing how just a tiny bit of warm golden highlights can make you look as if you’ve actually gotten a good night’s sleep.

5) And, lastly, we finally had ONE day of nice weather this past week and the kids were itching to play out back, break out the water balloons and play on the slip-n-slide.

We had a blast….

DSCN0496

DSCN0527

DSCN0518

Leave it to Bella to stuff the water balloons in her bathing suit top. I might or might not have encouraged her.

Then we had some fun shoving the balloons inside a small bottle as we filled them up with water…

I should probably mention that I was a little doped up on cold meds during the making of the above video, otherwise I probably wouldn’t have found it so funny.

Wait a minute…yeah, I would. After all, this is ME we’re talking about.

* I want to thank everyone who left a comment on yesterday's "Pouring My Heart Out" post, especially those of you who shared your experience with your own parents. It's never easy to bare our souls for the world to see but it was something I had to get off my chest and I'll admit I've never felt better.

I have decided to spend Mother's Day with Tim and the kids, without any interference from other family members. And I'll bet it'll be the first Mother's Day in 5 years which I will truly enjoy.

Oooh, fun in the sun!

And I'm SO glad you're doing Mothers Day on your terms this year!

They might not be quite ready for a career in medical illustration.

Or swimsuit modeling.

I completely agree with the sleeping comment. My kids can drive me completely crazy, but when I go in to check on them at night I forget all about that and come out telling my husband how amazing and sweet they are (to which he rolls his eyes, recalling the things I said a mere two hours earlier)!

I hope you really enjoy your mother's day with your family this year. They really are the best kind of days!

These are great! I love the sleeping one. I often think that. After I put them to bed and peek on them when they are asleep, I think "How could I get so mad at them and how can they annoy me so much?" Then I feel like a bad mom until the next day when it starts all over again :)

Colton's Mommy said...

They look like angels when they are sleeping because they are getting recharged for all the trouble they are about to cause--at least at my house anyway.
Good for you and your decision to spend Mother's Day how you want to and not have to cater to anyone else. It is YOUR day/

I knew there were more reasons as to why I dislike cats...

Heather said...

Bella is toothless??!!! So cute! I just told Kevin last night how beautiful the kids are when they sleep : ) Why can't they be angels when they're awake? Oh man, so sorry about the artwork on your couch! They are very creative with the blame game.

Jenny said...

love slip and slides! nice artwork on the couch...hope it came out!

HT said...

Wow that looks like a lot of fun! And I agree with the other comments that kids are just adorable and sweet when they are asleep even if I feel like strangling them an hour or two earlier!

I hope you have a microfiber couch!

Brooke said...

:-O will you be able to get that out of your couch??

also - i think mother's day celebrating YOU as a mother is a wonderful idea!!

Twins Squared said...

Oh Bella! :) So funny - my girls do stuff like that too! She is going to kill you one day!

As for your couch, SO sorry. That sucks! The kids had a nice cover up though I think. The cat. Clever.

Missy (Two Little Monkeys) said...

So do tell - did the markers come off? If so what did you use? You really do have the funniest kids ever - love Bella ahem "enhancements" Ha!
And I am so glad to see that you will have a FABULOUS Mother's Day this year - you really do deserve it!

Love the newly decorated couch! The walls in Carson's room are decorated in a very similar pattern. Imagine that. ;p

I have been dropping hints left and right to Charles about getting one of those Shark mops and to no avail. I may have to break down and buy one myself since obviously he is not getting the hint. Men.

LOL at Bella putting the balloons down her top. Looks like it was a fun time.

Have a great weekend!!

Natalie said...

I completely agree with you on the sleeping kids! That explains why I have so many pictures of my little ones sleeping ;)
Fun post! Thanks for sharing!

Lana@The Kids Did WHAT?! said...

Oh Good Lordy... I practically shot a snot bubble out my nose looking at the "before kids/afterkids" pics AWESOME!!

Yeah, Mackenzie likes to blame crap on the cat(s) too. It's getting quite old now, but I appreciate her insistance. (NOT)

And yes. The face of a sleeping child is 100% defense mechanism. They have no idea how lucky they are, do they??

Liz @ Sugarplum Creations said...

Oh my, where to start? YAY for you for getting your hair done! I've been doing my own for the last couple of years, but no matter, it feels great to have a little color and a trim! And yes, sweet sleeping children are the greatest. It's so much easier to forgive them for the days' events . . . like artwork on the furniture.

Eva Gallant said...

You do have the cutest kids! And I was so glad you decided to really enjoy mothers day this year. I think you would be a definite candidate for mother of the year!

Mimi and Tilly said...

Your hair sounds fab! The video of the water ballon made me laugh cos your laughing with the kids was infectious! And the sofa. Have you shed tears? Buy a big ole throw. And your Mothers' Day plans sound brilliant. Emma x

Jen said...

Now you have to admit, that bedsides the fact that they are on your couch that is some good art.

And really, they blamed the cat? My kids have not tried that one yet.

Well perhaps someday they'll be artists and your couch will be worth a fortune, lol!
Love the easter egg brains!!!

Helene go to time out for that!

Kim said...

Seeing the couch fills me with dread . . . I was hoping my twins were finished at age 3 with their scribbling stage (they've already ruined the walls), but looks like I have to stay vigilant.

The laughter in the video is infectious!

Please stop posting pictures of sunshine and swimsuits and water. This is April, and we still have snow. Thanks.

I can't believe they drew on your sofa! That had to be so aggravating. My two have left marks on the couch but not deliberately drawn on it - even though they know they're not supposed to have markers in the living room. We used rubbing alcohol and it came right out. I was really nervous about using it, but it worked. Not sure what kind of material your sofa is though so you might want to look into first.

Glad everyone got outside for a bit. I can't wait until it's summer and we can go out every day. I'm tired of this hot-cold-hot-cold stuff. At least it's not snowing!

I have often thought that kids are so adorable so they survive.

If you haven't gotten the stains out of the furniture yet, go buy Spot Shot. My sofa looks just like yours and I've used Spot Shot to remove ink & marker.

I have to say that my jaw dropped just a little when I saw the pic of little Bella...or shall I say DD Bella! Heehehehe! It looked like a great time was had by all!

God bless and have the best weekend!!!

HAHAHA Bella and I may have been separated at birth-- I used to shove water balloons in my dresses all the time. I have some hilarious pictures of me and my tootsie roll self in the middle of summer with huge bazoongas.

And the couch art-- I'm pretty sure I would have been grounded until adulthood. But that sweet little compliment probably helped ;)

Karen & Gerard Zemek said...

They do look sweet asleep. You're comment as to why cracked me up but then when I saw the job they did on the couch, I see your point!

Oh, and I think you are making a wise decision for mother's day!

First of all, I'm so happy to hear that you are spending Mother's day with just your husband and kids! That will be wonderful!

LOL about the cat drawing on the sofa and about Bella and the balloons. I remember us doing stuff like that too.

WooHoo for highlights! I could use some.

Carly said...

Did you get the markers out of the sofa??? My how talented your cat is a t drawing. LOL

Krissy said...

Does a Mr. Clean magic eraser work on sofas? I know it works wonders to take marker of walls, floors and tables...

Jessica said...

Wow! You have the same home decorator I do. I didn't know the cat got around that much.

And as far as mothers day; you are a mother. It's your turn.

"Cole: Mommy, you sure look pretty today."

LOL - that is way too cute!! Happy he's learning his survival skills so early in life :)

Merri Ann said...

If you take that steam mop back to Kohl's, I'll send you mine for free ... me and that mop just don't get along :))

And, how cute is Bella without those front teeth ... I miss CA weather ... I hear that Guam is the same weather every day ... 85 high 75 low ... but the month of August has 33 inches of rain ...

I love all your pics ... keep them coming !!

Hope you have a great weekend .

Rhaven said...

LOL! Love the cat comment! If it makes you feel better one of the rooms in our house had drawings very similar to your couch. And while it was "Washable" marker.. it did not "wash out". I hate Crayola :p

I wonder why children like to write on EVERYTHING that isn't paper. Seriously! But I have to say that their artistic skills are really quite good. It looked like a shark...was it?

Dianna@KennedyAdventures said...

Your couch looks like mine -- brown leather, with Sharpie accents.

Seriously, Magic Eraser takes it off. Get it wet, and wring it out, and gently rub the area. I had silver Sharpie on my couch, compliments of the boys, and it's gone. (except for the area I forgot about until Rachel's party - yay!)

Oh, and Bella will kick your butt for those boobies one day!

Clueless_Mama said...

I am so happy you are spending Mother's Day with your family. Good for you. My son actually did the same thing to my couch. We had just bought 2 leather couches and within the first month he drew all over one with a ballpoint pen. He was so excited to show me his artwork that I couldn't even get mad. Bella cracks me up!

Zeemaid said...

ah yes so sweet and adorable while they sleep.

Were you able to get your sofa clean?

Your sofa looks a lot like mine, and Hannah wrote all over ours with a pen once. I used rubbing alcohol to remove the stains and it worked!

Oh Helene - where are you? THree days without a blog post? I'm worried now! LOL

But maybe you were just waiting for my slack butt to comment on this post. I didn't take notes and there was just TOO much to comment on!

LOVE sleeping babies!
The egg images are disturbing, I mean very artitstic!
Where are the pics of YOU and your NEW DO?!
HILARIOUS water fun - cold meds or not!

SO glad you're going to have a YOU centered Mothers Day!

Xazmin said...

I totally agree with the kids sleeping theory! I would say I feel bad about the sofa if I didn't have pretty much every surface in my house decorated similarly.

We are finally getting some good weather too and had a nice Saturday at the park!

Mayhem and Moxie said...

Your kids are like walking public service announcements, Helene. I LOVE it.

Few parents are as lucky as you!

PS: I also read about your mother's day angst and am so glad to see that you resolved things the way you did. You deserve a special day all to yourself.

Ahhh, my kids or kid just colored on my family room sofa too in purple crayon. I think I went a little insane for a moment, and then later that day she colored on my dining table. Nice. Apparently I'm not scary enough, hahaha!! Looks like fun in the sun! Your posts always make me laugh!

I figure that if the children are alive when my husband gets home at the end of the day, I've done my job.
