I really don’t think it’s too much to ask…

I spent my Monday morning cleaning the kitchen. It’s the one room in the entire house that when it’s clean, it makes me feel cool, calm and collected.

When Tim came downstairs and saw how sparkly clean it was, he asked with great surprise, “Is that OUR kitchen?”

I answered, “I know, right? I would LOVE it if it could stay this clean throughout the entire week! That’s not too much to ask, is it?”

“Uh, yeah,” he responded with a snort. “As if that’s gonna happen? You know by tomorrow after breakfast, it’s gonna look like a total dump again…just accept it.”

One of the reasons I fell in love with Tim was because of his honesty…his ability to tell the truth, no matter how brutal it was.

And, you know, they say that the key qualities of a person that make us fall in love with them are those same key qualities that later annoy the hell out of us, years later.

Ain’t THAT the truth?!

It looks great, but I want to see a before picture so I can see if it's as messy as mine.
And I totally identify with that "things that make us fall in love/things that annoy us" stuff!!

I've said that for years!

I always like the way my husband could stay calm in any situation and never over-react. Now I realize he just a slug.

When my house looks like that, I just walk around and keep looking at it..looking and looking and looking!

A clean kitchen makes me happy to and I kid you not, I clean it at least 3 times a day. UGH!

Baaahahahahahahaahahaaa...that's exactly what Husband would say as he proceeded to leave crumbs all over my nice shiny countertop!

amen! i use to love jay dropping everything to snuggle on the couch and watch a movie with me. i wanted to give him one across the lips (and not a kiss) yesterday when we got home at 9PM and i had to make jello (the most solid food i get all day today) and sweep the kitchen while he watched "harold & kumar escape from guantanamo"

you are so right!

When i used to do relationship workshops I actually devoted a
whole hour to talk about this.

And yes, your kitchen is beautiful and uncluttered - I'm jealous. Mine is full of bottles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A girl can dream can't she....Let me have my moment!! I always feel better when things are clean too.
Beautiful kitchen!!

It looks so good, you only Knew what Mine looks like right now. LOL after my Husband invited his cousins over for a BBQ and did not clean it up.

Amy said...

it is so nice when all is clean. But only stays that way just for a little while when you have a husband and a little one..

he knows this...because he, and his offspring, plan to personally destroy it!!!

men and kids are like toxic to a kitchen!!!!

i've missed your blog! i've been so crazy busy that blogging's been on the back burner, and blog reading has been sitting over to the side cold and lumpy! i suck!!!

Wow... your kitchen looks great! I feel calmer just looking at pictures of it (which means I don't have to clean my own, right?).

Perhaps your Father's Day gift could include a helpful list of times you, in fact, to not want to hear the truth. Spare him a few nights on the couch!

Why do we sahm's get the biggest joy out of something this simple (well simple is a understatement when you know what it looked like before) but for me, the rest of the house could be a mess but if my kitchen is clean - I'm a happy momma!!!

It looks great and hope you got to enjoy it for more the 5 secs, like I only get unless of course it's today and they are at work/school til 4!!!!!!

kitchen looks amazing.. wanna come do mine ? lol

hey left you an award on my page :)

Okay, that is sooo true ...about the kitchen and the husband. I completely agree with the kitchen thing ... I hate going to bed with a mess in the kitchen and somehow when it's clean I feel in control.

Shell said...

At least he's okay with it being a dump most of the time. Mine doesn't understand why it can't stay clean all the time.

Mighty M said...

Haha!

I agree about having the kitchen clean....mine becomes a storage vessel for artwork, mail, notes, etc until I get sick of it and clean it all up and then it looks nice for a day or two before the collection starts again!

I can actually hear the choir of angels singing as the sun pours in on your BEE-YOU-TEe-Ful kitchen!

Wish there was a before shot, but you can still give us the after-after shot by the end of the day today! lol

Isn't it funny that's one of the many thoughts I too have held onto throughout my marriage! I love my husbands dedication - just why does he have to dedicate so much to WORK!?

Have a great week!

I feel the same way about my kitchen. I could care less about the rest of the house but the kitchen must be clean.

It looks amazing! Now you need to come and clean mine! I spent all last week scouring my house, including cleaning the carpets only to have it look like the house exploded this morning.

BigSis said...

Your kitchen looks great!

My problem with cleaning is that the crap tends to migrate. If the kitchen is spotless, the crap is in the basement. When the basement looks presentable, my bedroom is full of it.

Want to come over and clean mine now?

ooohh love your kitchen! you should do a "before" and "after" pic but for now, let's admire that clean kitchen. :)

haha - men, gotta love 'em. Congrats on your sparkling kitchen, it looks beautiful!

I love your kitchen, is so big!!! My kitchen is very small I say to everyone that come to visit that my kitchen is like a closet,ha.

I also spend a lot of time cleaning my kitchen. And make some little changes to feel better (yes, I need to feel comfortable with my kitchen if not I'm the worst person for make meals.)

Have a good day.

Living It, Loving It said...

Yeah, I know what you mean about qualities and annoyances. My husband had everything handed to him most of his life so because of that, he is really needy. I have had to work hard for anything I have ever gotten so I am nothing like him. In beginning, I loved that he needed me and now, sometimes, I wish he would just grow up. I love him, but his neediness drives me up the wall.

And I know what you mean about not asking too much. . . I will leave it at that.

The Mother said...

My kitchen looks like that (for exactly five minutes, about once a week).

Wendy said...

Your kitchen looks great! I agree...I wish our (housewives) hard work would remain clean, folded, put away, nice...for longer periods of time! I also agree that the thing a person falls in love with in their mate DOES annoy the hell out of you later. I used to love listening to my husband talk about his job...now...not so much! LOL

Megan said...

lmao!!! Too funny. I wish I could come up with witty remarks like that off the top of my head instead of having to think about it and then have inspiration strike later!

So... when you coming to clean my Kitchen? I am pretty sure there is a counter under all the stuff. We will just send the kids out in the field to play and ta-da! Bliss....

Megan said...

Oh, I SO hear you on keeping the kitchen clean. I don't think mine has ever looked as sparkly as yours though! Make the kids play outside today and go out for dinner - that will buy you an extra 12 hours on the cleanliness.

The Girl Next Door Grows Up said...

It is gleaming, like a brand New House gleaming!!! I clean once a week and after i just smile so big and then the next day I am running around again, picking things up.

It never ends.

Although when Emily had to go and see her dad for 2 weeks her room remained perfect and then I was sad that it was so perfect.

So I threw a sock on the floor to make it seems like she was home.

*LLUVIA* said...

LMAO!

I know what you mean. I used to love the way my husband was mellow and never made drama. But now I know he doesn't give a sh*t and it bugs me oh so greatly!!!

I love looking at your clean kitchen. Makes me want to clean mine up.....................
Yeah, I'm over it now. :D

Jenny said...

LOL, so true!

Nice clean kitchen! They sure get cluttered up fast though.

Natalie said...

Could NOT have said it better myself!! Isn't it amazing how fast it goes from clean to "dump"?

On a side note, it's crazy how similar our kitchens are; the plates and plants on top of the same cabinets, the knives and stove on the same counters...weird!

Karen said...

That IS a beautiful kitchen.

Tim cracks me up. :-)

HT said...

To some extend I have to agree. I love hubby's on-the-go personality. Now I feel like saying : "Can I just have a break from running A to B to C? Can I just sit and stare at the waves and not have to do anything?"

With kids in the picture things change, doesn't it?

Missy (Two Little Monkeys) said...

I think I had this very same conversation just yesterday. I love cleaning and within the blink of an eye - it is a mess again. UGH - the life of a MOM!

Anna said...

Come on, post the dirty picture!

I agree, I love to just sit and look at my clean kitchen...and yell at the kids to go somewhere else with their smudgy fingers, art projects, markers, animals, dirt, etc.

Amy W said...

Looks great!! Wish my kitchen was so sparkly! :) I hope it's still that way at least tomorrow and the next day...

Elizabeth said...

I think our Mum lives would be seriously enriched if we could all have just one room in our house that stay gloriously clean and tidy ALL THE TIME. That really isnt too much to ask is it?

Erin said...

I, too, want the before shot.

And I'm impressed it will actually stay this way until tomorrow. Mine would be a wreck within a few hours....but you did an amazing job in there. It looks all shiny and pretty and sparkly. Sigh. Is there anything better than a clean kitchen?

Well, maybe wine. And chocolate...and a baby sitter....

TornadoTwos said...

I love standing in my kitchen when it's all clean and I'll look around and smile, it makes me so happy! It's rediculous how quickly mine goes to trashed though. I always have a full dishwasher and a full sink. Crap on the counters. Food out & spilled. With 5 kids my kitchen doesn't stand a chance.

jungletwins said...

So clean- wowser!!! Deeply impressed. I too like to fantasize that rooms will stay clean after I clean them.

Ms Bibi said...

Lol, that is the truth. I just realized that.

Michelle @ Flying Giggles said...

That is definitely the truth!

So sounds like something my husband would say. It looks great...just having the counters cleaned off gives me a calm feeling. I hate clutter.

Creative Junkie said...

Nothing makes me feel more homey than a clean kitchen. I hate the process of getting there but the result always makes me feel like I can survive one more day of figuring out what the hell to do with chicken for dinner.

Lee said...

Oh so true, and sometimes it doesn't even take years!!

Jennifer @ The Toy Box Years said...

First - I LOVE your kitchen!!! It reminds me of my kitchen back in Virginia - which I miss terribly! Our kitchen now is about the size of an airplane potty. Sigh!

Like you, I find I am much calmer when the clutter of the kitchen is cleared away and the smell of Lysol is in the air. But it lasts for about an hour before hubby dumps his stuff all over the table, the girls dump their stuff everywhere, and one of the dogs pees or poops on the newly mopped floor.

Never fails! Hope yours lasted longer than that!

Alicia said...

LOLOLOLOL!! Oh my gosh, I'm cracking up at the "dump" statement!!

But, it does look beautiful, Helene!!! Only "if," right?

LucidLilith said...

That is a sparkly kitchen. Please put up an after picture...after the "hurricane four" have breezed through.

Oh my! I could not have said it better myself! My husband is a very straight talking, bluntly honest person which I have always loved about him, but since becoming a Mother I find his observations (very like your husband's about the kitchen) to sometimes be maddening! I think my changed reaction is all part and parcel of being a Mom, along with the ongoing Momnesia, ability to cry at every single little sentimental thing and a whole bunch of other non too subtle changes :-)

When I ge a chance to clean, I like to sit and admire it. lol

I relish a clean kitchen, but I think Tim said it best and in all truth with twins it won't take long to be a dump again........ And so is our lives.

Want to come clean my kitchen?

Ours never seems to be clean. I really try though.

A clean kitchen makes for a happy gal, I think. I love when the kitchen is clean, too. Ahhh

I figure that if the children are alive when my husband gets home at the end of the day, I've done my job.
